How To Install Lightroom XMP Presets
For Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC
Presets will sync with the Lightroom mobile app
If you have a paid subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud then you are in the right place.  Use these instructions to install XMP format Lightroom presets directly into Lightroom CC.  Use this method only if you have a paid subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud.

How this works:  XMP presets are installed into Lightroom CC on desktop.  The presets will be automatically synced and shared with the Lightroom mobile app, and also with Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC.  Preset syncing only works if the related devices and apps are signed into the same Adobe Creative Cloud account.

If you do not have a paid subscription with the Adobe Creative Cloud then you need to choose an alternate installation method.  Please see the related links near the bottom of these instructions

Why are there different types of presets?
Here is why there are three preset file types... over the years, preset file types have been changed by Adobe depending on the Lightroom version being used.  The three preset file types are:

DNG presets - Used with the free version of the Lightroom Mobile app that is not connected to a paid subscription with the Adobe Creative Cloud. DNG presets are not normally used on desktop versions of Lightroom. DNG presets take more time to install because each preset is saved inside a DNG photo file and must be saved, one at a time, on a mobile device.

XMP presets - These are the newest preset file format and they are the easiest and fastest to install. They are used with paid subscriptions to the Adobe Creative Cloud and are compatible with desktop versions of Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC, and Photoshop CC. They are also compatible with the Lightroom mobile app. XMP presets cannot be installed directly into a mobile device, but first must be installed into the desktop version of Lightroom CC. Once they are installed there, they will automatically sync with Lightroom CC on mobile devices connected to the same Adobe Creative Cloud account.

LRtemplate presets - Used for older desktop versions of Lightroom including Lightroom 5 & 6, and Lightroom CC versions that have not been updated with the Adobe Creative Cloud (versions prior to 1.4) If LRtemplate presets are installed into a new version of Lightroom CC, they will be automatically converted to XMP preset files.
Instructions for XMP preset installation into Lightroom CC
These instructions apply to Lightroom CC on a computer.  A computer is the only starting point for XMP preset installations.  XMP presets cannot be installed directly into a mobile device but must first be installed into Lightroom CC on a computer where they will sync with the Lightroom app on your mobile device as long as it is signed into the Adobe Creative Cloud.  If you plan on using presets with the Lightroom mobile app then a Lightroom CC installation is preferable to a Lightroom Classic CC installation.

Watch the instruction video below or use these text instructions.

1.  Start by downloading the zipped presets file in XMP file format by clicking the download button on your product download page.  You should have received a link to the download page by email.  Save the file where you can find it again.  This is usually the downloads folder.  Do not click on or open the downloaded file - it is currently zipped and it needs to stay that way for Lightroom to use the file.

2.  Open Lightroom CC on your computer.  Check to ensure it has been updated through the Adobe Creative Cloud by selecting help > updates.  If it has not been updated then your presets will not work.

3.  Open any photo in Lightroom CC.  You must have a photo on your screen.

4.  Click the presets button in the bottom right corner of the screen to open the presets panel.
5.  Click the 3 little dots in the top right corner of the presets panel. Select import presets and select the XMP presets file you just downloaded. The new presets will appear inside the presets panel after you upload them.

6.  Sync Lightroom CC to the Adobe Creative Cloud by clicking on the cloud icon in the extreme top right corner of the screen.  This will sync your presets to the cloud.

7.  To sync your presets with Lightroom on your mobile device, sign in to your Adobe Creative Cloud account through the Lightroom mobile app on your mobile device and tap the cloud icon in the top right.

Your presets should now be available from inside the Lightroom mobile app and will also be available to Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC on your computer.

When your presets are installed, watch this video to see how to use your presets. This is important if you want to get the best use from your presets.

Instructions for XMP preset installation into Lightroom Classic CC
See the video above for Lightroom Classic CC installation instruction which begin at 2:30 in the video.
If you plan on using your XMP presets with the Lightroom app on your mobile devices, then the Lightroom CC installation is preferable.  The instructions for a Lightroom CC installation are listed at the top of this page.

1.  Start Lightroom Classic CC.  Select help > updates and ensure your Lightroom Classic CC has been updated through the Adobe Creative Cloud.  Older versions of Lightroom Classic CC will not permit XMP preset installations.

2.  Open the develop module and ensure a photo is visible on your screen (this is important).

3.  Look for the word "presets" in the top left corner of your screen. Beside the word presets is a small + sign. Click it.
4.   Select "import presets" and select the XMP presets file you previously downloaded.  It should be located in your downloads folder.  Select your XMP presets download file and click the import button.

5.  Your installation should be finished.  You will see the presets folders appear inside the presets panel, below the word "presets".  You may have to click the little triangle to the left of the word presets.  If your presets do not appear, restart Lightroom and check again.
Special note to Mac users... sometimes Mac computers have a setting turned on that automatically unzips any downloaded zipped files.  Lightroom is only searching for a zipped file, which will explain why your "import presets" button does not appear to be working.  You can either re-zip the presets folders and try to import them again, or you can copy and paste them to the following location:

Macintosh: HD\Users\<username>\Library\Application Support\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
Windows: [C:]\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings

XMP preset installation directly into Photshop CC
This method can only be used with the newest version of Photoshop CC and it must have been updated with the Adobe Creative Cloud in the last six months. If you installed your presets into Lightroom CC using the methods described above then there is no need to do this because your presets will already be available inside Photoshop CC. This method should only be used if you have Photshop CC but you do not have Lightroom.

See video below for installation instructions or follow these text instructions.

1.  Open Photoshop CC.  Select help > updates and update your Photoshop through the Adobe Creative Cloud.

2.  Open any photo so you can see the photo in Photoshop.

3.  Open the Adobe Camera RAW editor (ACR) by selecting Filter on the top bar, and then selecting Camera RAW Filter.

4.  Click on the presets tab inside the Camera RAW editor.  It is on the right and looks like 3 little sliders stacked on top of each other.

5.  Right click in the box in a blank space below any existing presets that appear.  Select Import Profiles & Presets.

6.  Select the XMP format file you downloaded and import them.

That's it!  See the video below to see how to use your presets in Photoshop CC.

When you are done, watch this video to see how to use your presets.

Help Centre - Frequently Asked Questions
I am using Lightroom CC or Classic CC and this just isn’t working
1. Is your LR CC truly up to date? Verify this. Open LR Classic CC. Click help, and about. Your version number should start with an 8. You need to be absolutely sure you have opened the Adobe Creative Cloud app and updated your LR CC or Classic CC within the last few months. Many photographers are absolutely sure they have done this, but after investigating we discover their LR was not updated which will prevent you from being able to use XMP presets which are the type you are probably trying to install. Verify your LR CC is updated so you are 110% sure it is.
2. If you are up to date, then verify the download file has XMP included in the filename. You don't want to be using the LRtemplate file type which is for older versions of Lightroom.
3. Are you using a Mac? If yes, then Mac users often get hung up when they see the import presets button grayed out or generally not working. This is because Macs often unzip the compressed download file automatically. Lightroom will only import a zipped file type. The workaround is to copy the preset file folders you downloaded and paste them into this folder:
Macintosh: HD\Users\<username>\Library\Application Support\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
4. Are you using a Windows computer? The net result for an import of presets into LR CC is that you need to copy the 16 file folders you downloaded and paste them into this folder:
Windows: [C:]\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
5. Have you restarted Lightroom? You must restart it before you will be able to see your presets.
6. You restarted but there are no presets to be seen. Are you in the develop module? You must be in the develop module to see your presets.
7. You are in the develop module but you still don't see your presets. Do you have a photo on your screen? You must have a photo on your screen.
These presets don't work so well on my photos
I have found that many photographers don't know exactly how to use presets in the best way. Can you please watch this four minute video to ensure you are using presets the right way? I have had many photographers watch the video and say "Aha, now I get it!"  I created the presets you bought after months of work using the settings of my top 200 best photos of all time. I used them to win the title of nature photographer of the year from Master Photographers International.  Here is the video: https://vimeo.com/330619413
I don’t know what to do.
The most important thing to know is what version of Lightroom you are using.
If you are using a new version of Lightroom CC or Lightroom Classic CC, and you are a member of Adobe Creative Cloud which gives you updates for your Lightroom, then you are going to use the XMP presets  installation instructions.
If you have an older version of Lightroom such as Lightroom 6, Lightroom 5 or Lightroom 4, then you are going to need to follow the instructions for LRtemplate preset instructions.
Can I use these presets on my phone?
Yes, you can use XMP presets with the Lightroom mobile app on your mobile device. Here is how to do it.
1. You need Lightroom CC installed on your computer. You can get the Adobe Photography Plan for just $9.99 per month. This excellent program gives you the newest versions of both Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC. This is what I use. Here is a link to the program
2. Once you have Lightroom CC on your computer, you can install my presets collection. Here is a link to my presets:   https://www.timsphotos.com/presets-2
3. Next, install the Lightroom Mobile app for free on your phone. After you sign in with your Adobe login info, your presets will automatically sync from Lightroom on your computer to Lightroom on your phone.
4. Take any photo on your phone and use my presets inside Lightroom Mobile to retouch your photos and make them look beautiful. Upload your new photos from your phone to Instagram.
