Increase Your Dynamic Range

June 2, 2018 / Tim Shields
Believe it or not, the original photo you are seeing here is very boring. It was an overcast day and there was absolutely no dynamic range in this image. It was so blah that I don't even want to show you what it looked like. But there was one adjustment in Lightroom that made this image come alive. It is all about the dynamic range - the range of brights compared to the darks. To give this image more texture, saturation and vibrance I dropped the highlights down to zero and opened up the shadows to 100. Then I made a quick adjustment for white point and black point, and boom, massive and instant change that highlights the layered look of these rolling dunes.

If you have photos that are looking boring, trying increasing the dynamic range in Lightroom. You might be surprised with what you create.
